Asian Health Institute

As the large population of Asians continues to take a prominent presence within the San Francisco and Bay Areas, the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) has established the Asian Health Institute as one of the newest departments to build the important bridge with the Asian community to achieve health parities and improve medical access.

AHI - A bridge with the outside community

The presence of Asian Health Institute (AHI) helps to centralize, stimulate, and streamline the work relating to Asians within the various UCSF academic departments and the Medical Center, and to the knowledge to advance the health and healthcare of Asians locally, nationally and internationally. AHI strives to emphasize healthy lifestyle practices and preventive medicine through raising health literacy levels of the Asian American community in language- and culturally-appropriate health education programs.

AHI - A bridge within UCSF

Through the integration of the strong suites of existing cutting edge and translational clinical research, professional and community education, and excellent patient care services within the various UCSF academic departments and the Medical Center, AHI distils their essence into the continuum of culturally-sensitive patient-centered services for Asian patients, especially those with language barriers.

Goal of the UCSF Asian Health Institute

  • Advance clinical research and knowledge on the health of Asians
  • Improve medical access and quality of care for Asian patients at UCSF, especially those with limited English proficiency
  • Promote awareness and understanding of the unique cultural characteristics that may impact healthcare outcomes of Asians among UCSF faculty, students and staff through professional education
  • Increase health literacy of Asians for disease prevention, health maintenance, and medical access through bilingual community health education classes, health screenings and health information.
