Osteoporosis is common. But unlike other major chronic illnesses such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, etc., osteoporosis does not seem to affect us very much on a daily basis and does not draw our attention the same way. That is, until we have an accidental fall and fracture our bones, one of the most common mishaps that happen to older people.

According to the Bone Health Foundation, approximately 10 million Americans have osteoporosis and another 44 million have low bone density, placing them at increased risk of fractures and disability. “In the United States, two million fractures occur every year due to osteoporosis, which often results from neglecting bone health,” said Claire Gill, CEO of Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation.

Do you know if you have osteoporosis? Most people are not aware that they have this serious condition. Dr. Nicholas Hatamiya of the UCSF Orthopedic Institute is a specialist in primary care sports medicine, and he will share with us the common causes of osteoporosis and most importantly, the different ways to optimize bone health which are especially important in maintaining mobility and an active lifestyle.
